Project Description

This June the Mayes Creative team has launched #CreativeChallengeCornwall, a challenge to create community in lockdown.

While some are beginning to take the first steps back to normal life, for many who are still shielding or isolated by age and technology, this time can be increasingly lonely. In this time where you are looking for inspiration and a project to get your hands on, let us help you. Let us help you show those still isolated in your area by age, illness or lack of technology that they are in a community that cherishes them.

Our newest project is the challenge to #ShareTheSunshine – a challenge to make origami suns! But this isn’t where the project finishes.

We aren’t just trying to #ShareTheSunshine in your lives, oh no! We hope to spread some warmth throughout your community in these hard times, and show we are all together.

We hope that by starting a social media trend with our hashtag, of people sharing their origami sun creations, and by encouraging all of you to put your suns in your windows, others will be lifted up too.

You can create a window display, give the sun to someone or post it through someone’s letter box, even with an uplifting message on the front!

We are also starting an amazing project with St Agnes school, where the students have agreed to make origami suns to be given to the residents of Penventon Hotel care home, to #SharetheSunshine with them!

Has this inspired you, but you are worried that you don’t have any square paper?

Don’t worry! Rachael Powell made a brilliant folding video to show you how to turn your A4 rectangle into the perfect sheet of origami paper, all the way to the finished sun! Follow her steps and you will have some sunshine in no time! Do you find it easier to follow a step by step worksheet? For a worksheet showing you how to make the suns, click on this link. Worried about not having any ordinary paper?

Don’t let that stop you! You can even use ordinary household items like newspapers, post-its or receipts!

Don’t have any paper that is colourful? Have a look on our instagram @mayescreative or twitter @MayesCreative for ideas!

Simply colour in a plain sheet of paper with crayons or pastels…and voila!

Don’t forget to share your photos of your creations and window displays! If you share them with the hashtag #SharetheSunshine we will give you a like and, with your permission, share them on the Mayes Creative social media pages! Have you taken part and you’d like to level up your creations?

Follow our instagram and twitter at @mayescreative to see more ways you can #ShareTheSunshine. Coming soon will be making a crochet sun.

Spread some joy in your community this June.
